US Citizenship Test Study Guide

How to prepare for the US naturalization civics test: official facts, active recall, speaking practice and mock-exam review.

1.Understand the civics test

The USCIS 2025 civics test is oral: an officer asks up to 20 questions and 12 correct answers are needed to pass. CitizReady adapts the fixed-answer civics facts into multiple-choice practice. Confirm the current USCIS instructions before your interview.

2.Learn the civics facts in small groups

Study the official questions in small groups rather than one long list. Pay special attention to questions whose answers depend on your state or current officeholders; those cannot be reduced to a fixed multiple-choice answer.

3.Practise speaking the answers

The official test is spoken. Read each answer aloud, cover it, and say it again without looking. This builds recall for the interview format rather than only recognising an option on a screen.

4.Use mock exams to find gaps

Take a timed mock exam, review every error and return to the relevant civics topic. Use the official USCIS study materials for final verification. CitizReady is independent and does not guarantee an official result.
